Fresh Picked

garden_radishes_small

I had the seeds forever, but never got them planted until this year for the first time. They grew weird…some had really long tops and tiny radishes, some had short tops and larger radishes. Some didn’t get big at all. Why? They were all planted at the same time. These are the Sparkler radishes, the French Breakfast radishes haven’t really gotten big yet. Maybe I planted them too deep? It seems like the ones on the edges of the raised bed are the ones that got larger first. It’s a mystery for now.

SOWING: Seed directly into the garden anytime soil is workable from early spring through early fall. Cover seeds with 1/4 inch light soil, spacing seeds 1 to 1 1/2 inches apart.

THINNING AND SPACING: Once seedlings are established thin to 1 1/2″ to 2″. Leave 6″ to 12 ‘” between rows or plant in beds 2″ apart in all directions.

Sow seed where radishes or cabbage had not been grown the previous year. Before planting, fertilize and loosen the soil so that the roots are not hindered while growing. Fertilize again about 2 weeks after planting. Radishes cannot withstand much heat, and will get woody stems in hot weather. Stop sowing when the weather warms and begin planting again later for Fall harvest.
