Lettuce Invasion

The lettuce has been doing great and is going crazy. It is growing faster than we can eat it and I am giving it away like crazy before the temperatures get warm. Enjoying lots of yummy salads right now.

Heirlooms

garden_lettuce_butterbib08_small
The I picked up three small heirloom lettuce starts at Marshal Grains last week. The tags on the back say they come from “Heaven Sent Produce” in Arlington Texas.

1. Paris White Cos (Romaine) – 1868 Heirloom this lettuce has a white inside and boasts the highest nutritive value.
2. Merveille de Quatre Saisons (20) blond with cranberry tips, is a good cool weather lettuce.
3. Red Sails (20) variegated red leaf lettuce, slow bolting.

I have grown Red Sails before, but the other two are new to me. It will be interesting to see how they do by comparison. I also have some Black Seeded Simpson seeds, so I am going to try lettuce from direct sowing seeds this year also.

Bib Babies

garden_lettuce_07

The bib lettuce is doing really great, thick and getting a lot larger. I will probably start eating it soon! I put some new red lettuce starts into the ground today and mulched all the beds with straw. More photos soon!

Ready To Pick

garden_lettucegrown

The lettuce is really growing fast. The red leaf lettuce has lost a lot of it’s red coloring (see sprouts below) as it got bigger…not sure if that is normal or if it is lacking some kind of fertilizer. It tastes good. The weather has been unusually warm, and it will will be hard to keep the lettuce from bolting as the temperatures go up.

Something New

garden_lettucebed
Newly planted lettuce sprouts after being transplanted about two weeks ago. They are starting to get a bit larger.  The red leaf lettuce sprouts glow in the sun after being transplanted to the garden, 2006.
