More of a Good Thing
The broccoli did so well in the past I am excited to be planting it again this year. The vegetable garden got a rest last year and and the soil some tender loving amendments. After letting the garden take a year off I’m eager to get things growing. I’m getting an early start, so we’ll see how it goes this year. Five plants went in the ground today with more to be added later.

Success!

The broccoli heads are now larger than my fist…time to pick them and make some yummy cream of broccoli soup and broccoli-cheese quiche. Last year’s blooms were pretty, but this is much better!

Let’s Try Again
Broccoli seedlings went in the ground today. Hopefully I got them started early enough this year so they don’t bolt.

Bolting & Blooming
The broccoli is sending up small side shoots after I trimmed off the main head after it bloomed. Hmmm… I wonder if these will bloom too? I was going to pull them out this week and plant peppers, but I hate getting rid of something that is still alive! …and it’s leaves are so pretty! Maybe I can dig them up and put them in pots? oh well.

Something New

The broccoli started out ok, but then it got hot, the weather went up to over 85F, and the little heads that had started growing just burst out with flowers. Bummer, no broccoli to eat, I will have to wait till next year to make a fresh broccoli and cheese quiche.
I cut the flower stalks off and made a nice little arrangement for the table so it wasn’t a complete loss.
I will try to grow it again later, maybe this winter.
