Going Strong

The tiger lilies are getting stronger and taller each year with bigger blooms. A couple of babies have started to grow along side them too, so they are beginning to spread with the extra loving care. They really are beautiful. They make it worth the walk in the garden in the summer heat. Just like when I was a small girl…I can’t resist touching the anthers to get the inky red pollen on my fingers.

Grandma’s Leftovers

These tiger lilies have been planted on the property for a long time…but they had not bloomed for a few years. If I remember correctly they were once in the main flowerbed and also along the long driveway flower bed. I remember there were a lot of them at one time and I would pick bouquets of them when visiting my grandparents in the summer.

None of them bloomed the first year I was in the house and I thought they had all died and were gone. I wasn’t really sure what their stems looked like, until this one popped up last summer with a bud and flower. This is the only one that bloomed, but I did notice that there were about five smaller “stems” that came up and had bulbils-berries along the stems. It may be that in my “weeding” frenzy the first year I removed some of the early stems thinking they were weeds. Now I know what to look for, what is a flower and what isn’t…well…I am getting better at it anyway.

This year there are a lot more stems coming up and they are taller and look healthy. I think I will have more of them bloom this year so I am very excited to see them coming back with regular watering and fertilizer, and without me yanking them out before they have a chance to grow. It will be so nice to have them reestablished in the main flower beds like they were years ago!
