Filling Out

garden_salvia_indigospires_blooms08_small

These Indigo Spires have really filled in now that the summer temperatures have cooled off a bit and we have been getting a little rain here and there. I can’t believe they grew up from the three little plants I started with (see below). I’m really glad they got taller and bushier. I think cutting them back in June helped a lot. They are putting up lots of blooms. The two little cuttings I rooted are even blooming in the pots and I am going to set them out soon so they can root in the ground before winter. I’m also going to take some more cuttings to root for planting next spring. I am very pleased with how these progressed and will probably add clumps of them in other places around the yard now that I know how they grow and how to propagate them.

Just a Trim

garden_salvia_indigospires_cutting

The salvia finally started blooming. I took some extra time in the garden today to cut back the dead blooms in hopes that they will keep flowering into the fall. I hope they get bushier from being trimmed back. I guess it is going to take a couple more years before they fill in.

I took some of the cuttings and potted them up. It would be great if they take root so I could put them out this fall. I want these to really cover a wide area and I want it yesterday.

Patience is not my strongest gardening skill.

“Indigo Spires”

garden_salvia_indigospires_spring
I planted a new kind of Salvia out under the tree in the front yard in the Fall last year. They died back over the winter but have now put up new leaves. There are three plants. Even though they were all the same size when I planted them they are now large, medium and small. Hmmm…Wonder why? Still no blooms…waiting. Also, I thought they would have filled out more than this by now, I was expecting them to be larger and bushier.

“Henry Duelburg”

These bloomed, but when the trees filled in their location had too much shade so they didn’t really do very well. If they come up next year I will move them to a new location.
