Elegant Southern Heirloom

.
I was told by Marcella that I have a species of Herbertii Crinums, called “Milk and Wine”.
She also gave me a tip on how to propagate my seeds. Here’s her advice…
“Take an enclosed container like the pound cakes come in, turn them upside down and put several inches of milled peat moss in it, slightly dampen, lay (not plant) seeds on top of it and put top on. The seeds will put down roots and then bulb, and last leaves. When they get a couple or so inches tall plant out in pots until next year when you can place in ground where you want them.”
Now I have an excuse to buy a cake and grow Crinums. I will report back later with photos. I am also going to buy a couple of new species bulbs from Marcella. She has a huge variety of Crinums for sale. Also Lush Life Nursery has bulbs and some great articles with info on Crinum history.

Parts and Pods
I don’t think it is possible to take a bad picture of these flowers…they are so amazing. They put on a great show again this year. There are more of them blooming now that I have given them some fertilizer with regular watering, including the smaller ones that I dug up and moved to another location. I made a point of photographing the flower pods as they first appeared, opened, and seeded (see images below). The seed pods (at least I think these are the seed pods) get very heavy and swollen and drop to the ground because of the weight. The casing becomes soft and mushy and the large green seeds inside eventually fall out. I am collecting them to see if I can propagate them. Wish me luck!

So Pretty!
These blooms are from the Spring of 2004. These plants are heirloom crinums that were planted by my grandmother and they have naturalized in the garden after all these years. They are so beautiful! and elegant! I will have more photos each year as I divide and transplant them to other areas of the garden. I want to spread them out and propagate more of them. I hope I have identified them correctly…there are so many different kinds of crinums!
