had the seeds forever, but never got them planted until this year for
the first time. They grew weird...some had really long tops and tiny
radishes, some had short tops and larger radishes. Some didn't get big
at all. Why? They were all planted at the same time. These are the Sparkler radishes, the French Breakfast radishes haven't
really gotten big yet. Maybe I planted them too deep? It seems
like the ones on the edges of the raised bed are the ones that got
larger first. It's a mystery for now.

![]() SOWING: Seed directly into the vegetable garden anytime soil is workable from early spring through early fall. Cover seeds with 1/4 inch light soil, spacing seeds 1 to 1 1/2 inches apart. THINNING AND SPACING: Once seedlings are established thin to 1 1/2" to 2". Leave 6" to 12 '" between rows or plant in beds 2" apart in all directions. GERMINATION: (7-10 days). Keep soil
moderately moist during
germination.
Sparkler's are easy, fast growers. They are excellent in salads or as a garnish. They are bright scarlet to pure white is dotted with merry flecks, and the size of the fruit ranges from 1 to 1 1/2", with a long white root trailing from the end. Sow
seed
where radishes or cabbage had not been grown the previous year. Before
planting, fertilize the soil, making it as loose, rich, and
moist as you can, to enable the small root to grow. Fertilize again
about 2 weeks after planting. Direct-sow the seed as soon as the soil
can be worked in early spring, planting successively every 2 wees
until
late spring for extended harvest.. Radishes cannot withstand much heat,
and will get woody stems in hot weather.Stop sowing when
the weather warms and begin planting again later for Fall harvest. The
plant is columnar, reaching about 6 to 8 inches tall and up to 6
inches wide.
