10.5.07 ::BAM!
![]() I thought they were gone for sure...but I was wrong. I hadn't been outside in a couple of days and what a surprise when I went out to get the mail and BAM...an explosion of red blooms right there in the front flower bed. What a nice surprise! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ::

Minimal...
I
had a few more blooms this year than I had last year, but not as many
as I had expected. I am sure the drought we had
over the summer and fall kept the flowers from fully blooming. They
just didn't get enough water. I also think the bulbs need a full cycle
in order to get established and many of the bulbs I transplanted were
small. They probably need a year to grow before blooming. I am hopeful
we will have a good showing of them next fall.

Update
The leaves have wilted back and turned
yellowish, so I dug the bulbs up this week to divide them.
I trimmed off the tops,
and replanted them in a couple of different
locations.

Hurrican, Spider or Naked?
![]() This
lily is often referred
to by different names, the Hurricane Lily, because it blooms during the
fall
hurricane season after large downpours of rain. the name spider lily is
obvious, the petals have long sinuous arms like spider legs, and some
call it the
naked lily, because it has no leaves when it blooms. So which one is
correct? Well they are all acceptable it just depends
on which
part of the country you are from. the problem is that the names can be
misleading since there are other species of flowers that go by the name
"spider lily" and "naked lady". For that reason I prefer to
call it the Hurricane Lily...it's unique.
Most flowers will sprout leaves before blooms, but the Hurricane Lily does it backwards! This Lily's flower blooms straight from the ground without any leaves and reaches full bloom in early fall when most other plants are going dormant for the winter. Soon
after
it is in full
bloom you will see the green sprouts that are its leaves
coming through
the ground. As the flower dies, the leaves get taller
and taller and
stay green and healthy throughout the winter. In
spring the
leaves will begin to yellow and die back (see side photo) when
everything else in the
garden is just starting to sprout. I
have a lot of these scattered around the yard. Very few of them bloomed
this last year even though the leaves went
through their cycle.
I suspect that, like other bulbs, they have
stopped blooming because
they are crowded and need to be divided.
I will update with the results of this
after they have been dug up, divided and spaced out to see if this
increases the production of their flowers.
