Better Luck This Year?

These did not do nearly as well as I had anticipated last year! The cannas had a hard summer, and so far this spring I don't see any leaves sprouting.  They put out leaves last year at this time and looked like they were really going to do well, but then they seemed to stop growing and only one flower bloomed.  I don't understand why, because they did so well when I transplanted them in 2004 and I had flowers in the summer.

I planted them on the corner next to the street and this spot gets more sun and is dryer than the rest of the yard. The plants obviously need a lot more water in order to do well this year.  I am thinking about moving them to another location if they don't come back.

Sharing Plants

In our local paper we have a section called "Come and Get It". This is where people list things they want to give away for free if you just come by and get it. A nice lady had these cannas listed because they were overgrown in her garden and she needed help digging them out. So I went and dug up her free Cannas!

They transplanted great. I put them in the ground just hours after digging them up at her house.  I placed them in a semi circle at the edge of the property by the street where they will get lots of sun and will grow tall and shield "traffic" from the road near the driveway entrance. They were planted in summer of 2004 and have already started to sprout this year with green shoots getting taller each week. I think they have already multiplied from last year. I have a feeling these are going to do great and I will add more photos as they bloom later in the spring and early summer.
