Another Year Another Cabbage
This year I
started the cabbages a month earlier than last year. Seedlings went in
the ground on February 5th. I couldn't find any red cabbage this year,
so I just planted the standard green head cabbage. Last year's green
cabbage never formed a head in the center so I think those were just a
leafy variety. These should form a head ball on them...I wish the tags
had been better labeled! The image above was taken yesterday,
March 12th after I put straw mulch in the plant beds, (last year I just
mulched with extra peat moss). The weather is warming up so they will
probably start getting a lot bigger soon. More photos later as they
grow...

Live
and Learn
These
are getting bigger and bigger! They are so pretty...who knew
cabbage could be so attractive? They have come a long way from
the skinny little sprouts seen below. They still don't have a
compact head shape though... I am wondering if that will start to
develop soon?

Cabbage. Excellent for canning or
boiled with apple bits. Care: Space 18" x
30"
Fertilize, keep well watered and mulch.
Heads
are ready when firm.
Cabbages may "split" under varied moisture conditions (see above). If
you want to delay the harvest, twist the plants slightly damaging some
of the roots. This reduces the plants aility to take in water, reducing
splitting of the heads.
