  More Goodies Planted

I had to wait a bit before continuing with the garden planting, but this weekend I got back out there and was able to put in two more beds. It was sunny today warming up to the mid to high 50's after last week's cold spell that brought some scattered rain and night temperatures down near freezing. I bought some straw and covered everything for the cold last week. Now it's warm again and I'm wondering if we will get one more freeze?  I am going to guess that it will get cold but not near freezing at least one more time but that really from this week on the temperatures will slowly start to trend upward. It just feels like spring already with summer peaking around the corner.

So with the weather nice, I worked on the beds and added one bag of manure into the soil for each one. I planted four different kinds of lettuce, spinach, banana peppers and bell peppers (Yes I already planted peppers...and ...tomatoes! Again, I'm betting it's going to warm up from here on so I will take my chances.

I watered everything down with a nice drink of seaweed juice and called it a day. I still have two beds left to fill and the trellis and then I might add two new beds again this year for a total of eight. There is still a lot I want to plant, more tomatoes, jalapenos, eggplants, squash, pumpkins, beans, and...and...ok, let's just see what I get done. My intentions are usually more than what I can actually manage. Time to be realistic.

Oh yeah...the radishes I planted a couple of weeks ago are coming up and will have to be thinned soon...the carrots are a no show so far...maybe I put them in too deep or it has been too cold. Who knows, I will try again later.

Early Start Part II

Ok, the second bed went in today. It was a bit warmer today the average was about 67-72F when planting again sunny and cool with a slight wind.

Bed two is almost the same as bed one but with some different varieties of the same type vegetables...red onions (from starts), red ball cabbage, broccoli,  yellow-lights Swiss chard (from Marshal Grains nursery seedlings), Sparkler radishes, Danvers #126 carrots (from seeds bought last year). This bed was only prepped with cow manure, no coffee grounds and again finished off with two watering cans of regular water.

Early Start

After the elaborate process of moving and rearranging the vegetable beds the last few weeks I finally got to plant today and get the garden underway. This year I am going to try to keep a lot more detailed records, so here goes...

It was about 54F, sunny and cool, today when I planted.
I only got around to doing one bed today late in the afternoon. Here is what is now in "Bed 1" - yellow onions 1015 (from starts), mustard greens, broccoli, red-light Swiss chard (from Marshal Grains nursery seedlings), French breakfast radishes and red cored Chantenay carrots (from seeds bought last year).  This bed was prepped this week before planting with cow manure and coffee grounds. I finished off the planting with two full watering cans of regular water, no liquid fertilizer to get everything moist and set. In a week or so I will mulch around everything after the radish and carrot seeds have sprouted and been thinned out. This is my first time to plant seeds directly in the ground. I'm nervous, but excited to see how it plays out.

More tomorrow....
