The garden is picking up some pace and looking colorful!

In this first picture you can see the three main raised beds that have been planted with the "cool" season vegetables.  From back to front, there is baby bib lettuce on the left and on the right, red leaf romaine lettuceIn the next bed, on the left, red cabbage and regular cabbage to the right.

In the front, broccoli that has already flowered because the temperatures were too hot (see picture below) is on the left, and on the right are the brussels sprouts.

All the beds have marigolds planted in the center to add some color and help repel bugs.

The broccoli bolted and then bloomed...oh well, at least the flowers are pretty. I will try again some other time.

      Red Cabbage Sprout

The garden got off to an early start this year!  I am patting myself on the back for getting it ready before the weather started to get too hot. I thought I would begin with some early, cool season vegetables: red leaf romaine lettuce, butter bib lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, spinach and peas. I also devoted a whole raised bed to some strawberry plants.

Red-leaf Romaine lettuce sprouts

So far the red leaf romaine and the sugar peas are showing the most growth.

I don't think the broccoli is going to amount to much this year because one of the stalks sprouted yellow blooms already from the "heat wave" we had a couple of weeks ago.

Overall though, the plants seem to be doing ok even though they haven't increased much in size since I set them out.

This is my first time planting all of these, and basically I have low expectations as far as yields. I am just trying to get a feeling for how they grow, how they look and which ones have better success than the others.

I will be planting a lot more summer veggies soon. I will update as things develop. Wish me luck!
